Elastics Instructions

Purpose:

Elastics create a continuous force causing the upper and lower teeth to move into alignment. The elastics are connected to specific teeth to move the teeth in a planned direction.

How to wear elastics:

Elastics should be worn 24 hours per day unless otherwise instructed. You will be given instructions on where to attach the elastics to the braces. Be sure to replace the elastics 2-3 times per day (typically after meals) because the elasticity is gradually lost. If you forget how to wear them, please call the office so that we can explain proper placement.

What to expect:

Wearing elastics will initially make your teeth sore. This soreness will go away with continuous wear after a couple of days. Giving your teeth a “break” from the elastics will only make them feel sore the next time you put them on and set you back in treatment.

Tips:

  • Plan ahead, take elastics to school, work or trips. Ask for an extra package if needed.
  • If you run out of elastics before your next appointment, call and we will send you more.
  • Part-time wear will not work in correcting the bite.
  • If an elastic hook breaks or comes loose, call us immediately so that we can fix the problem.

Consistent elastic wear is probably the most critical determinant of whether treatment is completed on time. Our goal is to give you the best smile possible and speed up the day that your braces come off. Cooperation in wearing your elastics as instructed will help us reach that goal!
